REPLACEMENT WORKS ON THE VENTILATION CEILING

The Great St. Bernard Tunnel is planning major renovation and modernisation works on its infrastructure in order to maintain an excellent level of safety during transit. The works will involve structural works to replace the ventilation ceiling and will begin on 9 October 2023. These works will be carried out using the most advanced construction techniques, safeguarding transit through the Tunnel and, with it, the opening of the international Italy-Switzerland axis. Traffic during daytime hours (from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.) will not be affected by the construction works, maintaining the same traffic conditions as usual. During night-time hours (from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.), a mobile construction site will be set up inside the tunnel, aimed at replacing the ventilation ceiling in successive sections, which will allow light traffic to continue passing through. During the night-time hours, light and commercial traffic with vehicles of less than 3 metres in height will be able to pass under an alternating one-way regulation. The work will last until June the 20th 2024, allowing the first major section of the ventilation ceiling to be replaced on Swiss territory. The resumption of operations will then take place during the autumn of 2024.

From 9 October 2023 to 20 June 2024, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (except on Friday and Saturday nights and during holidays), transit will only be permitted for vehicles less than 3.00 metres high. (Category B1).
