{"id":1926,"date":"2022-03-22T14:33:42","date_gmt":"2022-03-22T14:33:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/z57nbebsowx.preview.infomaniak.website\/il-tunnel\/"},"modified":"2023-09-08T07:32:13","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T07:32:13","slug":"il-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/letunnel.com\/en\/il-tunnel\/","title":{"rendered":"The tunnel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-abca6367\">BACKGROUND HISTORY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since ancient times, the Great St Bernard Pass has played a&nbsp;fundamental role in linking the north and the south of Europe.&nbsp;It has been crossed by Roman legions, barbarian tribes, Saracens, Emperors of the&nbsp;Holy Roman Empire, Popes, crusaders and Napoleon Bonaparte&#8217;s forces.\u2028Nowadays, modern connections to Europe are guaranteed by the Great St Bernard Tunnel.<br><br>Construction work&nbsp;began on the Italian side in spring 1958, and soon after on the Swiss side. In less than six years the Italian concessionary firm&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/z57nbebsowx.preview.infomaniak.website\/datapage.asp?id=30&amp;l=3\">SITRASB S.p.A<\/a>. and the Swiss&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/z57nbebsowx.preview.infomaniak.website\/datapage.asp?id=31&amp;l=3\">TGSB SA<\/a>, to&nbsp;whom construction and subsequent administration were awarded, built the tunnel itself, the approach roads from either side, the toll stations&nbsp;at the tunnel entrances&nbsp;where infrastructure facilities are located,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/z57nbebsowx.preview.infomaniak.website\/datapage.asp?id=36&amp;l=3\">including the customs offices<\/a>&nbsp;and police stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When inaugurated on 19th March 1964, it was the first road traffic tunnel to be opened through the Alps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-4 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex
